Have you ever been to a wedding where the cake was gorgeous but the minute you too a bite you were grasping for something to wash it down with? Unfortunately, a dry wedding cake is a concern of most brides-to-be. The best way to find a great business to create your wedding cake is to ask friends and family for references. If you have been to a wedding yourself where you were amazed at the appearance and taste of the cake, get in touch with that bride and ask who made it. Word of mouth remains the strongest form of advertisement.
Most cake decorators recommend that you provide them with a three-month notice. You will be required to leave a deposit, depending on the type of cake you choose, which is usually refundable. In most cases, there is an additional deposit for the cake pillars, stairs, plates, bridges, fountains, etc. Again, this deposit is usually fully refunded as long as the items are cleaned and returned within an agreed upon timeframe.
Years ago, wedding cakes were made in chocolate and white. Today, while you can still choose those traditional flavors, you will find just about every flavor imaginable. There is white, chocolate, yellow, marble, carrot, banana nut, lemon, strawberry, cherry, spice, chocolate cherry, and some businesses offer their own specialty flavors. A great option if you have a tiered cake is to have each tier made a different flavor. In addition to the actual cake flavor, some cakes are made with fillings that include options of lemon, cream cheese, chocolate mousse, strawberry, raspberry, and again, specialty flavors. For the icing, you will find a nice variety of flavors as well although the most popular choices are white, chocolate, or butter cream.
Most wedding cakes are designed to serve pieces that measure 1 x 2 x 4 inches. When working with the cake decorator, they will be able to determine the overall size cake needed based on the number of people you anticipate attending. If you are having an extremely large wedding, some businesses will create the beautiful wedding cake that is enjoyed by the bride, groom, and close family and friends and then make separate sheet cakes, also beautifully decorated, to accommodate the other guests. This option still provides everyone with delicious cake while saving you money.
For the top adornment, you can use a traditional bride and groom, or for a more romantic appearance, have your florist provide a spray of real flowers that the cake decorator will add to the top of the wedding cake just before the reception begins.
